ECCHYMOSE
2023, HTML, JS, WebGL, Three.js.

This series, intended for display on a large, high-saturation screen, draws inspiration from both color field and op-art. It vibrates with the deep hues of the former, while exhibiting the retinal afterimage effect associated with the latter.

Did you identify the biological process depicted and abstracted in this piece of art, or are you content to simply submit to its physical impact?

In French, while “ecchymose” is the medical term, we refer to a bruise as “un bleu”, which means the color blue. However, this term hardly captures the intricate and changing appearance of an actual bruise.

Personally, I find the sight of any injury, including bruises, rather unsettling. However, I realized that there might be a unique way to appreciate without an unwanted context the oddly beautiful evolution of colors as the bruise heals — shifting hues much like a rainbow over time as the body repairs itself.

This could be achieved by creating a smooth, abstract gradient circle, geometrical yet accurate to the real-life color transition. This transformation mirrors the biological process of hemoglobin breaking down into heme and globin, then evolving to biliverdin, bilirubin, and finally hemosiderin.

Every edition within the series embodies a different skin tone, with each rendering a distinct display of color interplay.

While bruises are often associated with violence, this is not the perspective presented in this artwork. Rather, the focus here is on the captivating process of self-healing and the magic of biology that keeps us alive.
